What Are Dentures?

Dentures are removable replacement teeth, individually designed to fit your mouth. We understand that losing teeth, whether a few or a full set, can feel unsettling, so we take real care over fit, bite and appearance.

Dentures can replace a few missing teeth, several missing teeth, or all of the teeth in the upper or lower jaw. They also help where teeth have been lost to gum disease, decay or trauma. Modern dentures are made to look very natural, with close attention given to the shape, colour and position of the teeth. A complete denture, or full set, replaces all the teeth in one jaw and is usually made from acrylic. A partial denture replaces one or more teeth while keeping your natural ones, made from acrylic or cobalt-chrome. An overdenture gains extra support from remaining tooth roots or dental implants, improving stability. In some cases we can fit an immediate denture around the time of your extractions7.

    Dentures vs Dental Implants

    Dentures and implants both replace missing teeth, but they suit different needs. Dentures are removable, non-surgical and often the more affordable route, replacing anything from one tooth to a full arch.

    Dental implants are fixed into the jawbone and offer good stability, though they involve surgery and a longer process. For some patients, an implant-supported overdenture pairs the retention of implants with the practicality of a removable denture. We will never steer you toward a more involved option unnecessarily. At your consultation, we assess your mouth honestly and recommend what genuinely suits you.

    Missing Teeth. What Are Your Options?

    We understand that choosing how to replace missing teeth can feel overwhelming. Depending on your situation, your options may include dental implants, implant-supported bridges, conventional dental bridges, implant-supported overdentures, or complete and partial dentures.

    Each option carries different advantages, costs and maintenance needs. Leaving a space untreated is also a choice, though missing teeth can affect your bite and neighbouring teeth over time.     A full set replaces all the teeth in one jaw using natural-looking artificial teeth on a gum-coloured base, helping to restore your smile, your bite and your confidence when speaking 1,2.

    Acrylic framework

    Acrylic Partial Dentures

    Made from strong gum-coloured acrylic, these replace one or several teeth. They are straightforward, cost-effective and relatively easy to adjust or add teeth to if things change.

    Cobalt-chrome framework

    Chrome Dentures

    Cobalt-chrome dentures use a slim metal framework. In suitable cases this allows a thinner, more rigid design with less coverage of the mouth and improved stability from your natural teeth3.

    What are the different types of dentures available?

    We provide complete (full set) dentures to replace all the teeth in a jaw, partial dentures to replace one or several teeth, and overdentures that gain extra support from tooth roots or implants. Partial dentures can be made from acrylic or cobalt-chrome. We will talk you through which type best suits your mouth, lifestyle and budget.

    Will people be able to tell I am wearing dentures?

    Modern dentures can look very natural. We give careful attention to tooth colour, shape and position so the result complements your face and smile. Where appropriate, we can also discuss whether you would like your new teeth to resemble your previous smile or to make changes.

    How long do dentures last?

    Dentures can last for many years, but not forever. Your gums and jawbone naturally change shape over time, and denture materials can wear. A denture may gradually become looser, so we may recommend adjusting, relining, repairing or eventually replacing it. Regular reviews help us monitor these changes9.

    Can dentures be held in place with implants?

    Yes. Dental implants can be used to retain an overdenture, providing significantly greater stability and satisfaction in suitable patients, particularly in the lower jaw 4,5,6. A CBCT scan may be needed to assess the available bone before implant treatment is recommended.

    Will new dentures feel strange at first?

    A new denture is a new object in the mouth, so it can take time for your tongue, cheeks and muscles to adapt. You may initially notice increased saliva, mild pressure areas or slight changes to speech. Most patients gradually adjust, and we can make small adjustments after fitting to relieve any pressure.

    How much do dentures cost?

The price of dentures depends on the type you need, the materials used, how many teeth are being replaced and the complexity of your individual case.
