What is a dental crown?

A dental crown is a custom made cap that covers the entire visible portion of a tooth, restoring its shape, strength, function and appearance. Crowns are used where a tooth has been damaged by decay, fracture or heavy wear, or where a large filling or root canal treatment has left too little structure to function safely on its own.

Once fitted, the crown behaves like a natural tooth. You bite, chew and clean it normally. A crown wraps the tooth in full, which sets it apart from composite bonding (additive resin on the surface) and from a veneer (which covers the front face only). A crown is the right choice where structural reinforcement is needed, not just cosmetic improvement.

At Zenith, every crown assessment begins with a full clinical examination and, where indicated, a 5D digital scan of your teeth, so your clinician can plan your treatment with precision before any preparation takes place.

Pre Treatment

Before treatment begins, you will attend a full clinical assessment with your clinician. This includes radiographs where indicated, a 5D digital scan of your teeth, a discussion of material options and a written plan with a personalised quote. If preparatory work is needed, such as a root canal or replacement of a failing filling, that is discussed and quoted at this stage.

Treatment

The tooth is fully anaesthetised and shaped to receive the crown. A precise digital scan is taken with no putty impressions. A temporary crown is then fitted to protect the tooth while your custom permanent crown is created in the laboratory, which typically takes two to three weeks.

3.

Your New Crown

At your fit appointment, the temporary crown is removed and your new permanent crown is tried in. Your clinician checks the colour match, shape, bite and contact with neighbouring teeth. The crown is adjusted if needed and then bonded into place. Peer reviewed studies report five year survival rates above 95% across modern crown materials.

4.

Post Treatment

After your crown is fitted, you may notice mild sensitivity to cold or biting pressure for a few days. This typically settles as the tooth adjusts. Crown appointments are routine dental visits and you can return to normal activities the same day. Good oral hygiene and regular check ups help extend the life of your crown.

    What is a dental crown and why might I need one?

    A dental crown is a custom made cap placed over a damaged or weakened tooth. It restores the tooth's shape, strength and function and is commonly used after a large filling, root canal treatment, or to protect a cracked or broken tooth. Crowns are also used to cover a dental implant or to anchor a dental bridge. Your clinician will assess your tooth and recommend a crown only where it is the most appropriate treatment.

    How long does a dental crown last?

    Modern crowns are designed to last many years in suitable patients with good care. Peer reviewed systematic reviews report five year survival rates above 95% across lithium disilicate, zirconia and metal ceramic crowns, with most crowns functioning well for 10 to 15 years and often longer before review or replacement. Long term success depends on daily brushing, routine hygiene visits and avoiding habits such as grinding, which can shorten crown lifespan.

    Will the crown look natural?

    Yes. Modern materials such as lithium disilicate (e.max) and zirconia closely match the colour, translucency and surface character of natural enamel. Each crown is shade matched, shaped and tested in your mouth before final cementation. Front tooth crowns are particularly demanding aesthetically and we typically use lithium disilicate for that reason. If you are planning to whiten your teeth, we recommend doing so before the crown is made so the shade can be matched to your final tooth colour.

    Is the dental crown procedure painful?

    The tooth is fully anaesthetised before any preparation, so the appointment itself is not painful. Some patients experience mild sensitivity to cold or biting pressure for a few days after treatment, which typically settles as the tooth adjusts to the new crown. If sensitivity persists beyond a couple of weeks, let your clinician know so they can assess the fit and bite.

    Can a dental crown be replaced if it becomes damaged?

    Yes. If a crown becomes loose, chipped or worn, we assess the underlying tooth first to decide whether the existing crown can be re cemented, refurbished or needs replacing. Early intervention almost always saves the crown. We recommend contacting us promptly rather than waiting, as leaving a loose crown can allow decay to affect the tooth underneath.

    Can I have a crown if I grind my teeth?

    Yes, but a custom night guard becomes essential and material choice matters. Full contour monolithic zirconia is typically the right material for heavy grinders because of its strength and resistance to fracture. The night guard protects both the crown and the rest of your teeth from the forces of grinding. Your clinician will discuss this at your consultation and factor it into the treatment plan.

    I have an old, dark crown I want replaced. Can you help?

    Yes. Replacing an ageing or unsightly crown is one of the most common reasons patients come to Zenith. At your consultation we will assess the underlying tooth and gum margin and discuss whether a new all ceramic crown is the right next step. In many cases a fresh lithium disilicate or zirconia crown is a significant improvement in both appearance and fit compared with older metal ceramic restorations.
