Dental crowns at our Nottingham Zenith Cosmetic Dentistry clinic are a long-lasting option that will strengthen the underlying tooth whilst providing a natural feel and look. Crowns should last up to 30 years.
How Do Crowns Work?
A cosmetic crown is used to entirely cover or “cap” a damaged tooth. Besides strengthening a damaged tooth, a crown can be used to improve its appearance, shape or alignment. A crown can also be placed on top of an implant to provide a tooth-like shape and structure for function. Porcelain crowns or ceramic crowns can be matched to the colour of your natural teeth. Other materials include gold and metal alloys, acrylic and ceramic. These metal alloys are generally stronger than porcelain and may be recommended for back teeth. Porcelain bonded to a metal shell is often used because it is both strong and attractive. Crowns are usually made nowadays with Zurcomia, which is metal free.
How long does a bridge and crown last?
Very few procedures in dentistry will last a lifetime. The average cosmetic crown or bridge should last up to 30 years. A well done crown or bridge can last longer than 10 years provided that the person has good oral hygiene and comes to the dentist at least twice a year for examinations, cleaning, and follow-up care. The longevity of your full ceramic crowns are determined by your personal lifestyles and mouth-related habits, the oral hygiene practices you followed, and the amount of wear and tear the dental crown can take.
Your dentist may recommend a cosmetic crown to:
- Replace a large filling when there isn’t enough tooth remaining
- Protect a weak tooth from fracturing
- Restore a fractured tooth
- Attach a bridge
- Cover a dental implant
- Cover a discoloured or poorly shaped tooth
- Cover a tooth that has had root canal treatment

FAQs
How long do you have to wait to eat after getting a cosmetic crown put in place?
At Zenith Cosmetic Dentistry in Nottingham, we advise waiting at least 30 minutes after ceramic crowns and metal crowns have been placed to eat solid foods.
The dental cement that bonds the cosmetic crown to the tooth needs time to set and solidify. If pressure is applied to the crown immediately after it is placed, the crown will move into an undesirable or uncomfortable position.
Is getting metal crowns painful at your Nottingham clinic?
Getting a cosmetic crown should be a virtually painless process from the first visit to the last. Your mouth will be numbed before any filling or fitting is done by our dentist in Nottingham.
Will anyone be able to tell that I have ceramic crowns?
With the new materials available for creating crowns at Zenith Cosmetic Dentistry in Nottingham, it’s unlikely. Unlike crowns made from metal or ceramic-fused-to-metal, all-ceramic crowns look incredibly realistic and will blend in well with your natural teeth.
