What are dental implants?
A dental implant is a small titanium post placed into the jawbone where a tooth is missing. Over three to six months, it fuses with the surrounding bone through a process called osseointegration, then supports a custom made crown, bridge or denture that looks and functions like a natural tooth.
Because the implant replaces the root as well as the visible crown, it works independently of neighbouring teeth. It does not rely on adjacent teeth for support, as a dental bridge does, and it does not move under load, as a denture can. Implants also help preserve the jawbone, which begins to shrink when a tooth is missing.

Before treatment begins, you will attend a detailed consultation with Dr Karan Maini, including a clinical examination, medical history review and an in house 3D CBCT scan of your jaw. You will leave with a written treatment plan, a personalised quote and a clear discussion of anaesthetic options including local anaesthetic, sedation or general anaesthetic.

Treatment

Implant surgery is carried out under your chosen anaesthetic at our Nottingham clinic. A titanium post is placed into the jawbone, where it gradually fuses with the bone over three to six months. Under local anaesthetic, placement typically takes 30 to 90 minutes per implant. Where general anaesthetic is chosen, multiple implants are often placed in a single planned session.

After your implant is placed, you will receive personalised aftercare guidance and a schedule of healing reviews. Mild swelling and tenderness for two to three days is common and managed with over the counter pain relief. Most patients return to work the day after local anaesthetic surgery. After a general anaesthetic session, one full day of rest is recommended.

How long does the whole dental implant process take?
From consultation to final crown, most single implant cases take three to six months. The surgery itself is a single appointment of around an hour under local anaesthetic, or longer where multiple implants are placed in one session. The remaining time is healing and osseointegration, during which most patients carry on with normal daily life.

Am I suitable for dental implant treatment?
Most adults with good general and oral health are suitable for dental implants. You will need healthy gums, adequate jawbone volume (or be suitable for bone grafting), and a commitment to routine dental care. How do I care for my dental implants?
Daily brushing, flossing and regular dental check ups are essential for long term implant health. Implants should be cleaned in much the same way as natural teeth. Peri implantitis, which is inflammation around the implant, is the main long term risk, and is significantly reduced by consistent home care and professional hygiene visits. Your care team will provide personalised aftercare guidance after your treatment.

Can dental implants fail? What happens if they do?
Implant failure is uncommon in suitable patients with good care, with peer reviewed studies reporting 10 year survival above 95%. Where failure does occur, the implant can usually be removed and, after a healing period, a replacement implant placed. Potential risks including infection, temporary discomfort or implant failure will be discussed in full at your consultation before any treatment begins.
